Youth Summit

The Canadian International School of Hong Kong will be hosting the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) and Roots & Shoots Youth Summit on Friday, November 11th, 2016.

More than 150 student representatives from 12 different local & international schools will be leading presentations about environmental and social issues, participating in NGO workshops and listening to Dr. Jane Goodall give her keynote speech.

YOUTH SUMMIT PARTICIPANTS

 WHEN PARTICIPANTS ARRIVE

We recommend that all Youth Summit schools arrive by 8:30am, in order to give enough time to set up their exhibition & for students to choose workshops to attend.  Schools should make their way to the Lobby of the Leo Lee Arts Centre at 36, Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen, and the registration desk just inside the main entrance glass doors.

Each school should:

  1. at the registration table, receive a packet of Youth Summit programme booklets for use during the day

  2. decide the exhibition presentation & workshop schedule for their students

  3. have each of their students sign-up for their preferred workshops (as there is a size limit for the workshops, it is a 1st come-1st served sign-up between 8:30 - 8:50 am; if the preferred workshops are full, join another workshop on offer - they are all informative and interactive led by incredible NGO representatives)

  4. find their exhibition table space (school names are on the tables in the lobby) & set up their exhibition space by 8:50am

NOTE: If you need any technical support, find a Youth Summit CDNIS organizer to help you.

 STUDENT EXHIBITION PRESENTATIONS

The Roots & Shoots mission:
empower young people to care for the environment, the community and animals through action

The theme for this years Roots & Shoots Youth Summit:
Pieces of Action

The representatives from each school will be made up of 1 or more student groups that create projects to address various environmental and/or social justice issues. The exhibition presentations will be in a school fair format where multiple groups present to other Youth Summit students, teachers and various Canadian International Students at the same time. Each presenting school will have a table space for their posters/stand-up displays and/or laptops.  Students and teachers can walk around the exhibition to learn about the ways in which various schools tackle local and global issues.

WHAT STUDENT PRESENTERS SHOULD PREPARE AND/OR BRING:

  • a talk lasting about 3 minutes that shares the aims of your project, any challenges faced, the way these challenges were overcome and your overall successes

  • a display board (cardboard that can stand up) or poster with your school's name, your student group name (if any)

  • OPTIONAL: on the display board/poster, you could have the overall aims of your project(s), photos of the experience, or a laptop that has a gallery of photos or a brief powerpoint presentation (similar to what your poster would have)

Each exhibition presentation block lasts for 30 minutes.  During this time, as people approach the school tables, student presenters should share what projects they have done at their schools (their respective ‘pieces of action’).  This would also be the time to share ideas for collaboration with those students (and schools) who are interested in the same issues. Student presenters should also be prepared to answer questions about their projects.
